On the western side of the island of Rhodes, about five kilometers southeast of the village of Theologos, there is a unique location that soothes the souls of all, none other than the Valley of the Butterflies. It is one of the most attractive destinations on the island.

During August, thousands of butterflies of the genus Panaxia (Quadripunctaria Poda) flock to the butterfly valley to breed. During the rainy season, the butterflies, still in the caterpillar stage, remain in the Mediterranean bushes and feed on the foliage.

As the end of the wet season approaches, towards the end of May, the final stage is completed and the butterfly in all its perfection emerges in the form we all recognize. They continually move towards areas of high humidity, always following the "waterways", and as the dry season progresses, they finally reach the valley.

This is an ideal visit for families with children as by combining your walk in nature you can also discover the life cycle of butterflies which has a lot to tell. You and your children will surely be enchanted by the walk through the green valley with its beautiful waterfalls and a small river. The best part is that you will see butterflies all around you covering the tree trunks during the walk. Along the route to Kalopetra Monastery, you will find plenty of wooden benches in case you want to take a break.

Our second stop will be Filerimos Mountain which is located in the area of Ialyssos and is famous for its many attractions. The main ones are the ancient acropolis of Ialyssos, the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos, the two chapels of Profitis Ilias and the path to Golgotha. With a height of 267 m, it offers a stunning panoramic view of the northern side of the island of Rhodes. Something that will also impress you is the large number of peacocks you will see around!

Enjoy your refreshments in the small café of the area and be enchanted by the quiet landscape around you. From there, on your left, you will find the entrance that will lead you to the archaeological site of the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos and the ancient Acropolis of Ialyssos. To the right begins the path that leads to the road to Golgotha and ends at the Great Cross where the panoramic view invites you to take many photos.
